Global Nursing Projects

In partnership with BCH’s Community Health Program and Boston Public School (BPS) nursing leadership, the GHP led a collaborative program to support the unique and critical needs of BPS nurses on the front lines during COVID.

Due to severe neurosurgical care shortages in the Caribbean, Carly Campbell traveled to Antigua and Barbuda as part of her Global Nursing Fellowship to assist a team of surgeons in performing neurological surgeries, assess local needs, and develop strategies for sustainable improvements in care and education.

Christine Placidi, a Global Nursing Fellow, partnered with a BCH cardiac surgeon in Bomet, Kenya, to perform pediatric cardiac surgeries and provide educational resources, while offering ongoing support via WhatsApp to help establish a self-sustained program.

Global Health Nursing Fellow, Erin Babine, facilitated Basic Life Support training for 37 health care professionals in Bangladesh.

From 2020-2024, a specialized pediatric oncology curriculum developed by Ghanaian stakeholders and international partners was taught by Colleen Nixon and Kim Shephard to 29 nurses from 6 hospitals throughout Ghana.

Nearly half a million babies, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, are affected by hydrocephalus each year; in partnership with GHP, NeuroKids is addressing this by training global surgeons in ETV/CPC, a minimally invasive alternative to shunt-dependence.

In 2021, clinical leaders at JFK Medical Center (JFK) in Monrovia, Liberia identified targeted neonatal nursing education as a priority initiative. This partnership is a continued collaboration for neonatal nursing support between Boston Children’s Hospital’s Global Health Program (BCH) and JFK.
