Epidemiology & Biostatistics in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

In February 2020, as part of the global health track in the Boston Combined Residency Program at Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Mohsin Ali completed a four-week teaching and clinical elective in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He was based in the departments of pediatrics, epidemiology, and biostatistics at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and Muhimbili National Hospital. The teaching component aimed to support pediatrics' residents with the design, analysis, and reporting of their mandatory master's theses. Informed by student and faculty requests, Dr. Ali taught introductory concepts in epidemiology and biostatistics and also provided one-to-one guidance to second- and third- year residents. A bi-directional learning experience, Dr. Ali learned about Tanzanian hospital systems and approaches to pediatric care while rotating through the pediatric wards, observing rounds, and attending case conferences and grand rounds.
