Strengthening Pediatric Surgical Capacity in Ukraine
Dnipro Children’s Hospital has become a critical treatment center for children in Eastern Ukraine amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis following the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. As a primary referral center for children from the most affected regions, the hospital provides essential care not only for common conditions such as asthma and appendicitis but also for severe war-related injuries. Approximately 95% of children arriving with severe blast injuries require immediate surgical intervention.
In response to this urgent need, the Global Health Program, in partnership with Brother's Brother Foundation, coordinated the procurement of $100,000 worth of specialized surgical equipment for the hospital. This new equipment is designed to facilitate less invasive procedures, particularly benefiting children with head and neck injuries by accelerating recovery and improving their quality of life.
This partnership has supported Dnipro Children’s Hospital in delivering vital services to Ukraine’s most vulnerable children by expanding its surgical capacity, opening additional operating rooms and ensuring it could continue to provide care for children and families in some of the most heavily impacted and access-constrained areas. The initiative was guided by direct communication with the local hospital’s medical director, who identified the most pressing needs, ensuring that the funds were allocated effectively to meet the growing demand for surgical equipment and intensive care supplies.
